Major UTME Retake Announced by JAMB for 379,997 Candidates

JAMB Orders UTME Retake for Over 379,000 Candidates Due to Technical Issues

ABUJA: The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a mandatory retake of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for a significant number of candidates. In a statement released today, May 16, 2025, the examination body revealed that 379,997 candidates who participated in the recent UTME will be required to sit for the examination again due to widespread technical glitches experienced during the initial tests.

According to JAMB, the decision to conduct the retake was made after a thorough investigation into numerous reports of system failures, biometric verification issues, and other technical challenges encountered by candidates across various examination centers nationwide. These issues, the board stated, compromised the integrity and fairness of the examination for the affected candidates.

“JAMB deeply regrets the inconveniences caused to the affected candidates,” the statement read. “Our priority is to ensure a level playing field for all aspiring candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions. The identified technical challenges made it necessary to order a retake for the concerned candidates to uphold the credibility of the UTME process.”

The board assured the public that it has taken steps to rectify the technical issues and implement more robust systems to prevent future occurrences. Details regarding the date, time, and specific centers for the retake examination will be communicated directly to the affected candidates through their registered phone numbers and JAMB profiles on the official website.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, addressed the press, emphasizing the board’s commitment to transparency and fairness. “We understand the frustration and anxiety this announcement may cause. However, this decision is in the best interest of the candidates and the integrity of our examination system. We have learned from the challenges faced and are putting all necessary measures in place to ensure a smooth and fair retake exercise.”

The affected candidates are urged to regularly check their JAMB profiles and registered phone numbers for updates and specific instructions regarding the retake examination. JAMB has also established helplines and support channels to address any queries or concerns from the candidates.

This development is likely to generate discussions among parents, educators, and stakeholders in the education sector. While some may commend JAMB’s proactive approach to address the technical challenges, others may express concerns about the potential stress and disruption for the affected students.

The rescheduled UTME for the 379,997 candidates is expected to take place within the next few weeks. JAMB has pledged to provide all necessary support and resources to ensure a successful and fair examination for all concerned. The board reiterated its commitment to providing a credible and transparent admission process for all Nigerian students seeking tertiary education. READ ALSO
