YouTube outage February 2026 sent shockwaves across the internet on Tuesday evening, as Google’s premier video platform suddenly went dark for millions of users worldwide. Social media quickly erupted with reports of the blackout, making the outage the top trending topic as frustrated viewers were met with the stark “Something went wrong” message.
The disruption began around 7:50 p.m. ET (12:50 a.m. GMT), leaving homepages and video feeds inaccessible across the globe. According to Downdetector, user complaints peaked at more than 300,000 in the United States alone, with tens of thousands more in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Brazil.
The technical failure affected more than just YouTube’s main site. YouTube TV users reported over 8,000 localized issues, while YouTube Music and YouTube Kids experienced severe interruptions. Initial reports suggested that the West Coast of the United States, including tech hubs like San Francisco and Los Angeles, bore the brunt of the outage, but the East Coast and international users were soon caught in the disruption.
About ninety minutes into the outage, Google acknowledged the problem, attributing it to a malfunctioning recommendations system. The internal error effectively “blinded” the platform, preventing content from appearing across apps and web interfaces. Even when the apps were technically accessible, the absence of algorithmic suggestions left users staring at empty homepages and broken search results.
Engineers worked through the night to stabilize the service, with partial recovery beginning around 9:30 p.m. ET. By the following morning, February 18, 2026, Google confirmed that all YouTube services were fully restored.
