Why Rivers PDP Chairman Was Suddenly Suspended: Full Details
The political storm in the Niger Delta has reached a fever pitch as the Rivers PDP Chairman Suspended following a dramatic shift in allegiances. On Saturday, January 3, 2026, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caretaker Committee in Rivers State announced the immediate suspension of its chairman, Hon. Nname Robinson Ewor.
The decision was made during an emergency meeting in Port Harcourt, where committee members accused Ewor of “anti-party activities” and “hobnobbing” with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The party leadership stated that Ewor’s recent public declarations and alignment with Wike, who was recently expelled from the party, were actions capable of dismantling the PDP structure in the oil-rich state.
The suspension follows a shocking turnaround by Ewor, who was previously a staunch ally of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. During a “thank you” visit by Nyesom Wike to the Ogba, Egbema, Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) on Friday, Ewor publicly renounced his factional leadership and collapsed his structure into the pro-Wike camp.
He went as far as accusing Governor Fubara of “betrayal,” claiming the governor had misled party stakeholders into believing he could wrestle political control from Wike, only to leave them “stranded in the middle of a political sea.” Ewor further alleged that the governor failed to honor peace agreements brokered by President Bola Tinubu, leading to his personal decision to align with Wike and support the “Renewed Hope” agenda for 2027.
In response to these developments, the PDP Caretaker Committee has moved swiftly to fill the vacuum. The Secretary of the committee, Chief Ogbam Ojimah, has officially assumed the role of Acting Chairman. During a press briefing, Ojimah asserted that by his actions, Ewor had “voluntarily resigned” his position long before the formal suspension was issued.
Ojimah reiterated that Nyesom Wike remains an expelled member of the PDP and has no legal or moral right to interfere in the party’s internal affairs. The committee also reaffirmed its loyalty to the national leadership under Dr. Kabiru Turaki, promising to reposition the party for the 2027 elections despite the high-profile defections.
This internal rift highlights the deepening crisis in Rivers State, which saw a State of Emergency declared in early 2025 and the subsequent defection of Governor Fubara to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in December.

As Wike continues his local government “thank you” tours, he has vowed to stop Fubara’s second-term bid, accusing the governor of being a “timid” leader who cannot maintain working relationships with key stakeholders. With the PDP leadership now divided and legal battles looming over the control of the state’s political machinery, the suspension of Robinson Ewor marks a definitive end to any pretense of unity within the Rivers State PDP.
