Why I Didn’t Join ADC’, Seriake Dickson Speaks Out

Senator Seriake Dickson explains why he didn’t join the ADC, clarifying his political stance and addressing rumors about a possible move to the party.

The political spotlight has intensified after Seriake Dickson reveals why he snubbed ADC, choosing instead to establish a new political platform known as the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

Former Bayelsa State Governor and current Senator representing Bayelsa West, Henry Seriake Dickson, confirmed his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party while unveiling the newly registered party on Friday, March 6, 2026.

Speaking during the announcement, Dickson explained that his decision was driven by principle rather than political convenience. He warned that Nigeria’s current political direction risks sliding toward a one party system, a development he believes could weaken democratic institutions and undermine the balance of power envisioned in the country’s constitution.

Addressing speculation surrounding his political move, the senator acknowledged his respect for leaders within the African Democratic Congress. However, he said the party’s ideological structure did not sufficiently address the urgent governance challenges facing Nigeria. According to Dickson, while opposition coalitions can be useful, they must be built on clear policies and strong governance principles rather than simply bringing together dissatisfied politicians.

He stressed that any political movement he associates with must demonstrate firm commitments to true federalism, decentralization of power, and significant investments in human capital, particularly in education and healthcare. Without these core foundations, he warned, political alliances risk becoming unstable arrangements that ultimately fail to provide meaningful alternatives to the ruling establishment.

Dickson’s departure from the PDP represents a notable shift within the South South political landscape. The senator had long been considered one of the influential figures within the party, previously serving as chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum during his tenure as governor of Bayelsa State. He attributed his decision to leave the party to prolonged internal divisions that he believes have weakened its capacity to function as an effective opposition.

The newly formed Nigeria Democratic Congress received official registration from the Independent National Electoral Commission in February and is now positioning itself as a credible third force ahead of the next electoral cycle. Dickson said the party is designed to provide a platform for Nigerians who feel excluded from existing political structures while promoting what he described as a truly national vision that cuts across ethnic and regional boundaries.

Reflecting on recent defections of political figures in the region to the All Progressives Congress, Dickson adopted a philosophical tone. He acknowledged that while he had mentored many leaders in the past, every politician must ultimately follow their personal convictions and political path.

The senator maintained that his primary focus will now be on building the NDC into a strong institution capable of restoring public confidence in democratic participation. According to him, the party’s long term objective is to strengthen accountability in governance while giving citizens renewed faith in the electoral process.

With Nigeria’s political climate gradually heating up ahead of future elections, Dickson’s move is already being viewed by analysts as a bold attempt to reshape the opposition landscape. By rejecting the ADC option and charting a new course with the Nigeria Democratic Congress, the former governor appears determined to lead what he described as a fresh ideological movement aimed at preserving competitive and inclusive democracy in the country.
