Pentagon-released periscope footage reportedly shows the torpedo striking the hull, causing the vessel to fracture and sink within minutes. General Caine described the mission as an extraordinary demonstration of American global reach, adding that more than 20 Iranian vessels have been neutralized since hostilities began.
The geopolitical fallout has been immediate. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the strike as an atrocity at sea and warned that the United States would face consequences for targeting what he described as a visiting naval guest. In India, opposition leaders have questioned the government’s response to a military strike occurring near its maritime sphere of influence.
US officials insist the operation was a defensive action aimed at preventing threats to global shipping lanes. However, the location of the strike, far from the Strait of Hormuz, signals an expanded operational scope in the Indo Pacific region.

Rescue efforts off Sri Lanka’s coast remain ongoing, although hopes of locating additional survivors are fading. Sri Lankan naval teams reported heavy oil slicks and scattered debris at the site. At least 32 rescued sailors are receiving treatment at a hospital in Galle under heightened security.
