The US and Israel attack on Iran has plunged the Middle East into an unprecedented period of volatility, following a series of coordinated strikes that reportedly decimated the leadership of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

On Tuesday, March 3, 2026, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that American forces successfully destroyed a key IRGC command and control hub in Tehran, describing the operation as a decisive effort to “cut off the head of the snake.” The offensive is part of a sustained military campaign targeting Iranian military infrastructure, missile bases, and air defense systems across more than 130 cities over the past four days.

The escalation follows the collapse of critical nuclear negotiations in Geneva in late February. In response, US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu authorized what they described as a preemptive defensive mission.

Military briefings indicate the operations focus on three strategic priorities: neutralizing Iranian air defenses, dismantling command and control centers, and limiting Tehran’s ability to retaliate with naval and drone assets.

In Tehran, high-security complexes, including the Ministry of Intelligence headquarters and the Sarallah IRGC base, have been struck repeatedly, while US forces have targeted missile sites in central and southern Iran and Israeli jets have conducted air raids across northern cities, including strikes on state-run media facilities.

The humanitarian toll has been severe. The Iranian Red Crescent Society reports that nearly 800 people have died since the attacks began. Residential areas near Nilufar Square and Gandhi Hospital have suffered significant damage, leaving Tehran largely deserted as civilians seek shelter. In Minab, a tragic strike claimed the lives of 165 schoolgirls and staff, prompting mass funerals and international calls for humanitarian corridors.

Iran has responded with its own counteroffensive, dubbed “Operation True Promise 4,” launching hundreds of ballistic missiles and suicide drones targeting Israel and Gulf states, including Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. In central Israel, a missile attack on Beit Shemesh killed at least nine civilians, marking the deadliest incident in the country since the conflict began.

Officials in the US and Israel assert that their missile defenses have intercepted the majority of threats, allowing offensive operations to continue.

The ongoing conflict is reshaping the region’s geopolitical landscape. President Trump has suggested the campaign could last four to five weeks, framing it as a historic opportunity for the Iranian people following the reported assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Meanwhile, neighboring Arab states warn that the collapse of Iranian state structures could trigger widespread regional instability. Air travel in Dubai and other Gulf hubs remains suspended, and maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz faces significant disruption. As the US and Israel attack on Iran transitions from tactical strikes to systematic targeting of the regime’s core, the world watches with growing concern.
