The University of Abuja has sent shockwaves through the academic community after the management announced that UniAbuja expels 28 students and revokes the certificates of 15 alumni following a rigorous internal disciplinary process.
Songbux reports that the decision was finalized during the 184th regular meeting of the University Senate where the institution’s leadership reviewed various reports of misconduct involving current undergraduates and former students.
This massive crackdown is part of a broader commitment by the university administration to sanitize the learning environment and uphold the integrity of the degrees issued by the institution.
According to the official statement released by the university’s Head of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, the expulsion of the 28 students was triggered by a variety of grave offenses including cultism, drug abuse, and examination malpractice.
The Senate carefully deliberated on the recommendations of the Central Disciplinary Committee before reaching the verdict that the affected individuals were no longer fit to remain within the university fold. The institution emphasized that it maintains a zero tolerance policy for social vices that threaten the safety and academic excellence of the campus community.
In a move that has drawn significant attention, the university also revoked the degree certificates of 15 former students who had already graduated. This drastic measure was taken after investigators discovered that the alumni had secured their graduations through fraudulent means or were involved in significant disciplinary infractions that went undetected during their time on campus.
By withdrawing these certificates, the University of Abuja is sending a clear message that academic fraud and character flaws will be prosecuted retrospectively regardless of how much time has passed since graduation.
The breakdown of the offenses reveals that the majority of the current students were expelled for their involvement in secret cult activities and the possession of illicit substances. The university management noted that these activities not only violate the student handbook but also pose a direct threat to the lives of other law abiding students.
On the other hand, the alumni whose certificates were revoked were found to have manipulated their academic records or participated in criminal activities that contradict the “character and learning” certification prerequisite for every Nigerian degree.
As the news of the disciplinary action spreads, the university has directed the affected students to immediately surrender their identity cards and any other university property in their possession. The management has also notified the National Youth Service Corps and other relevant agencies about the revocation of the 15 alumni certificates to ensure that the individuals can no longer utilize the fraudulent qualifications for employment or further studies.
This decisive action is being hailed by stakeholders as a necessary step toward restoring the diminishing reputation of higher education in the country.
Songbux gathered that the university intends to publish the names and photographs of the expelled individuals in national dailies to serve as a deterrent to others.

The Vice Chancellor reiterated that the university remains a place for serious academic pursuit and character development, adding that the administration will continue to monitor the conduct of both students and staff to prevent future occurrences of such shameful behavior.
For now, the campus remains calm as the administration continues to implement new security and monitoring measures designed to root out cultists and academic fraudsters.
