State Police Reform Nigeria For Better Security, President Tinubu

State Police Reform Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to restructure Nigeria’s security framework, declaring that State Police Reform Nigeria remains a central pillar of his Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking during a high level meeting with traditional rulers and key stakeholders, President Tinubu said the push for state police is no longer a matter of political debate but an urgent national priority. According to him, decentralizing the policing system is essential to effectively tackle the diverse security challenges confronting different parts of the country.

The President disclosed that legal and constitutional steps required to establish state police are being accelerated in close collaboration with the National Assembly and state governors. He emphasized that the initiative is designed to strengthen grassroots security and improve response times in communities that have long suffered from banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence.

Tinubu explained that Nigeria’s current centralized policing structure is overstretched, often limiting officers’ ability to respond swiftly in remote areas where they lack local knowledge. By creating state controlled police formations, he said, law enforcement would become more responsive, intelligence driven, and accountable to the communities they serve.

Reassuring Nigerians of his administration’s commitment, the President noted that despite prevailing economic challenges, his government remains focused on delivering its campaign promises. He called for patience and understanding from citizens, stressing that ongoing economic reforms, though difficult, are necessary steps toward long term national stability and prosperity.

Addressing concerns over the rising cost of living, Tinubu acknowledged the hardships facing many households. He said the government is rolling out targeted social intervention programs aimed at providing immediate support while investing in critical infrastructure that will drive sustainable growth.

The proposed move toward state policing has reportedly gained strong backing from the Nigeria Governors Forum, with several state leaders indicating readiness to fund and manage their respective commands. However, the President assured that federal oversight mechanisms would be put in place to safeguard against abuse of power and ensure strict adherence to democratic principles and human rights standards.

He also urged traditional institutions to take on more proactive roles in intelligence gathering and conflict resolution within their communities, describing security as a shared national responsibility.

As discussions progress at the legislative level, the federal government is equally prioritizing reforms within the existing Nigeria Police Force, including improved welfare packages, modern equipment, and advanced training to enhance operational efficiency.
