A man has been found guilty of attempted murder following a violent stabbing at Speakers’ Corner, concluding a high-profile case of ideological extremism at the Old Bailey.
The defendant, Edward Little, attacked a Christian preacher during a heated public debate at the historic free speech site in Hyde Park. What began as a theological disagreement quickly escalated into a brutal assault witnessed by dozens of bystanders.
Prosecutors told the court that Little arrived at the location with clear intent to confront religious speakers. During the exchange, he produced a concealed knife and stabbed the victim multiple times in broad daylight. The attack caused panic among the public, who regularly gather to discuss faith, politics, and philosophy.
The jury heard evidence that the assault was not a spontaneous outburst. Digital material recovered from the defendant’s devices revealed extremist anti-religious views and a fixation on using violence to silence opposing beliefs. Prosecutors argued the attack was premeditated and motivated by hostility toward religion rather than a sudden loss of control.
The victim survived but suffered significant physical injuries and ongoing psychological trauma. Medical reports confirmed that the knife narrowly missed vital organs, highlighting the severity of the crime.
In addition to attempted murder, Little was convicted of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. Community leaders and free speech advocates welcomed the verdict, saying it reinforces that passionate debate must never turn into violence.
Following the attack, the police increased patrols in Hyde Park to reassure the public and protect the long-standing tradition of open but peaceful expression at Speakers’ Corner.

Sentencing is expected next month, with Little facing a substantial prison term. The case has sparked a wider discussion about public safety, ideological radicalization, and the limits of protest in shared public spaces.
