Ota Toll Gate Accident: Governor Abiodun Orders High-Level Investigation

Ota Toll Gate Tragedy Governor Abiodun Orders High-Level Investigation

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has launched a high-level investigation into the Ota Toll Gate accident, a tragic crash that claimed six lives and left several others with severe injuries. The Ota Toll Gate accident investigation comes in the wake of a Mack tanker carrying vegetable oil that suffered brake failure while descending the busy slope toward the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.

Governor Abiodun expressed profound grief over the fatalities and condemned the persistent culture of reckless driving among heavy-duty vehicle operators, warning that the state will no longer tolerate negligence from truck owners who fail to maintain their fleets.

The catastrophic incident occurred at the notorious Ota Toll Gate axis, where the out-of-control tanker crushed a yellow Suzuki minibus and a tricycle before striking pedestrians at a bus stop. The tanker driver reportedly fled the scene, prompting the Governor to instruct security agencies to ensure his swift apprehension and prosecution.

The investigation will examine not only the immediate cause of the mechanical failure but also the compliance of articulated vehicles with Ogun State’s roadworthiness standards.

In addition to the probe, Governor Abiodun has directed the Ministry of Transportation and the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) to intensify patrols and enforce safety regulations along major industrial corridors. These measures aim to prevent a repeat of the Ota Toll Gate tragedy by ensuring that only vehicles in proper mechanical condition operate on the highways.

The state government has also committed to providing medical support for survivors receiving treatment at the State Hospital in Ota and extended condolences to families of the deceased, whose bodies were taken to the Ifo General Hospital morgue.

The tragedy has sparked public outrage, with residents calling for permanent engineering solutions at the Toll Gate slope, a site known for frequent fatal accidents. Governor Abiodun assured citizens that his administration is committed to infrastructure upgrades and stricter oversight of heavy-duty vehicles to protect lives and property.

He also urged motorists to exercise extreme caution and adhere to speed limits, particularly in densely populated trading areas where mechanical failures can quickly turn deadly.
