  • The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, was prominently featured, performing the symbolic turning-of-sod at the new campus. The Sultan described the Ooni as his “twin brother” and commended his vision, stating that investing in education is the “best legacy” a leader can leave behind for humanity.
  • The Orangun of Ila, Oba Wahab Oyedotun, and the Orangun of Oke-Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, were also present, alongside other influential rulers like the Deji of Akure.
  • Notably, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, sent a congratulatory message to the Ooni on his 10th anniversary, celebrating the milestone and the monarch’s impactful leadership, despite their historical differences.

The Vision Behind Ojaja University

The Ooni described the new university campus as a non-profit making, legacy project designed as a model for educational reform and an instrument for generational empowerment.

The institution’s vision is centered on culture, creativity, and entrepreneurship:

  • Cultural Embassy: The Pro-Chancellor, Professor Lere Baale, described the university as not just an educational institution but a “cultural embassy” and a center for African leadership renewal.
  • Creative Focus: The Ile-Ife Campus is specifically designated as the cultural and creative nerve center, planning to host the Faculty of Arts, Cultural Studies, and Creative Industries, with programs focusing on Mass Communication, Film, Media, and Yoruba Language.
  • Legacy Project: Oba Ogunwusi emphasized that while wealth and positions fade, “legacy lasts forever,” urging other stakeholders to view university development as a contribution to the nation rather than a profit-driven venture.

The launch of the Ojaja University campus served as the climax of the week-long ÀṢÉ10 festival, a grand Pan-African celebration of Yoruba heritage, unity, and global cultural reconnection marking the Ooni’s remarkable ten years on the revered throne of Oduduwa.
