Nnamdi Kanu Prison Sentence and way forward. It is no longer news that Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, was sentenced to life imprisonment yesterday, November 20, 2025, following a long and highly anticipated court session. The judgment, delivered by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, marks a pivotal moment in the legal journey of the separatist leader.
The court found Mr. Kanu guilty on all seven count charges laid against him, confirming the government’s prosecution on charges related to treasonable felony and terrorism.
The Verdict and Concurrency of Sentences
The pronouncements by the court included multiple prison sentences, with some running concurrently, a critical factor in determining the actual time to be served.
The Prison Sentences are detailed as follows:
- Life imprisonment on Counts 1, 4, 5, and 6.
- 20 years imprisonment on Count 3, with no option of fine.
- 5 years imprisonment on Count 7, with no option of fine.
Crucially, Justice Omotosho ordered that all these sentences are to run concurrently. This means that, despite the numerous convictions, Mr. Kanu’s maximum time to be served is equivalent to the longest single sentence, which is life imprisonment.
Special Custody Conditions and Forfeiture Order
In addition to the life sentence, the court imposed rigorous conditions for Mr. Kanu’s custody, citing what the judge described as Mr. Kanu’s violent tendencies and atrocities.
The Special Custody Conditions stipulate that:
- Mr. Kanu is not to be kept at Kuje Correctional Centre.
- He is to be held in protective custody which is speculated to be in Correctional Centre in Sokoto Northern part of Nigeria, though the specific facility was not named in the proceeding, under strict security.
- He is completely barred from possessing or accessing any digital device, including phones, laptops, and tablets.
- Any future access to a digital device is allowed only with the express approval and direct supervision of the National Security Adviser, NSA.
Furthermore, a significant Forfeiture Order was issued, mandating that all transmitters and broadcasting equipment belonging to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) or used by Radio Biafra are permanently forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Courtroom Outburst and Judicial Protocol

The lengthy trial concluded with an emotionally charged moment as Nnamdi Kanu expressed profound frustration with the ruling and the judicial process. He was heard exclaiming in court, “YOU DON’T KNOW LAW,” “M@D PEOPLE,” and “WHICH LAW GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO WAIVE OFF MY WRITTEN ADDRESS,” demanding of the judge, “OMOTOSHO, SHOW ME THE LAW,” and concluding with, “GOD WILL PUNISH YOU, NOW AND FOR EVER.”
It is important to note that Justice James Omotosho, acting as the presiding judge, did not have the responsibility to engage Mr. Kanu in any argumentative discussion aimed at winning a case. Neither is it the judge’s responsibility to show him the law under which he is acting. Judicial protocol dictates that it is the responsibility of the defendant’s lawyer, or Nnamdi Kanu himself, to engage the judge constructively and try to raise awareness about the law in support or against what the judge is trying to do during the trial. The specific law under which the court is sentencing a person is usually outlined by the judge on judgment day, provided the defendant or counsel has engaged the court constructively during the trial.
What Next for Nnamdi Kanu?
The key question remains: Can we say, this is the end for Nnamdi Kanu or there is still hope for Nnamdi Kanu?
The deed is done, but there is still hope for Nnamdi Kanu through two primary avenues: the judicial process and a political solution.
1. The Judicial Appeal Process: Mr. Kanu has the undeniable right to appeal the judgment and may seek a favorable outcome from the Appeal Court. If necessary, he can still take the matter up to the Supreme Court, the final judicial arbiter in the country. Legal experts believe that this process will commence immediately.
2. Presidential Pardon: At this point that Nnamdi Kanu is sentenced officially for the first time, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu can now officially step in and grant him a Presidential Pardon. This political option could offer a quicker route to freedom than the arduous judicial appeals. If the Igbo political leaders truly want Nnamdi Kanu to come out, they know what political mechanisms need to be activated at this juncture.

The Immediate Reality
As we speak, Nnamdi Kanu’s life imprisonment sentence is counting already. He is now officially a prison inmate. Prison authorities will take his bio data officially today. The tailor will take his measurements today. Within seven days, his blue uniform with his code written on it will be ready and Nnamdi Kanu will have no other option than to put on the blue uniform. This is the sad reality on the ground as we speak.
