NELFUND Boosts Student Loan Uptake in South East

The NELFUND student loan South East campaign has officially launched, aiming to increase participation from the region as data reveals a disproportionately low number of applications from eastern Nigeria. Despite the federal government’s initiative to provide interest-free financial support to students in public tertiary institutions, the South East has lagged behind other zones in accessing this vital educational resource.

During a high-level engagement with stakeholders and student union leaders on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, NELFUND Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr emphasized that the fund is designed to be inclusive, ensuring no eligible Nigerian student is denied higher education due to financial constraints.

The low application rate from the South East has been linked to factors such as skepticism about government programs and a lack of clear information about the application process. Some students expressed concerns over long-term debt obligations, despite NELFUND’s flexible repayment terms, which only begin two years after completing the National Youth Service Corps.

To address these challenges, NELFUND has deployed teams to campuses across the five eastern states, offering hands-on assistance with the online portal and explaining that approved loans cover both tuition and a monthly upkeep allowance of N20,000 for verified students.

Recent statistics from the NELFUND Student Verification Portal show that while northern and western regions have seen a surge in registrations, many institutions in the South East are yet to fully upload student data, a critical requirement for successful applications.

Sawyerr urged Vice Chancellors and Rectors to prioritize uploading records to ensure their students are not left behind. He noted that over N183 billion has already been disbursed nationwide to more than 1.7 million beneficiaries and stressed that South East students must claim their share of this educational support.

To accommodate students who faced technical challenges or were unaware of the program, NELFUND recently extended the application deadline to March 2026. Sawyerr reassured the public that the selection process is strictly merit-based and fully automated, eliminating the risk of political interference or favoritism. He encouraged students to rely on official channels and dismiss rumors surrounding the fund.

The sensitization campaign will continue throughout the week, with town hall meetings planned at major educational hubs including Enugu, Owerri, and Awka. By bringing information directly to students and grassroots communities, NELFUND aims to overcome mistrust and misinformation. The initiative is critical to achieving the federal government’s goal of expanding access to quality education, a cornerstone for regional and national economic growth.

As the new deadline approaches, the spotlight remains on ensuring that South East students catch up with the national trend of leveraging the NELFUND student loan scheme for academic stability and success.
