Minister of Technology Resigns Amid Forgery Scandal

Minister of Technology Resigns Amid Forgery Scandal. Chief Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, has resigned from the Federal Cabinet following a torrent of allegations concerning his academic credentials and a high-profile certificate forgery scandal.

The resignation, confirmed by the Presidency on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, comes less than a year after his appointment and amidst escalating public scrutiny.

In a statement released shortly after his exit, Mr. Nnaji vehemently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that his decision to step down was purely to “protect his integrity” and prevent his personal issues from becoming a “distraction” to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Heart of the Allegations

The intense pressure that led to the Minister’s resignation centered on two specific documents:

  1. University Degree: Allegations suggest Nnaji presented a purported degree certificate indicating he graduated from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), in July 1985. However, court filings revealed conflicting accounts, with questions raised about whether he was actually issued a degree certificate by the institution. Further reports indicated that he may have applied to retake a failed course (Virology, MCB 431) in both the September 1985 supplementary examination and the June 1986 examination.
  2. NYSC Certificate: Scrutiny also focused on his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate. Critics pointed out inconsistencies, including a claimed service period of 13 months (April 1985 to July 1986), instead of the statutory 12 months. Most critically, the certificate was reportedly signed by Col. Animashaun Braimoh, who only became the NYSC Director-General in January 1988, years after Nnaji claimed to have completed his service.

Despite the mounting evidence and ongoing judicial proceedings, Nnaji maintained that his resignation was “not an admission of guilt,” but rather a principled choice to uphold due process.

Enugu State Government Refuses Involvement

Adding to the pressure, the Enugu State Government where Nnaji hails from publicly distanced itself from the scandal.

In an official statement, the Director of Information in the Ministry of Information and Communication, Chukwuemeka Nebo, charged the former Minister to “carry his cross” and personally clear his name before the public, rather than implicating the government in his “entirely personal” issues.

The state government’s statement questioned Nnaji’s failure to appear at a scheduled world press conference to address the allegations directly, asking: “Why invite the media, only to outsource the conference? Why send third parties, who lack the answers to critical questions, if he truly has nothing to hide?” The state insisted that the questions regarding his academic history are legitimate and demand a direct answer from the Minister himself.
