The Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, has rolled out a comprehensive set of new guidelines, introducing mandatory information requirements for all online applications to update business names in Nigeria. This significant policy shift underscores the commission’s commitment to bolstering data integrity, improving transparency, and streamlining post-registration procedures for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, MSMEs. These updated mandatory requirements for CAC Business Registration updates came into immediate effect from Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

New Mandatory Update Requirements
Under the revised framework, any proprietor or business owner intending to modify their registered business details must now supply specific, verifiable information and documentation. This applies to all alteration requests, including changes to the business name, operational address, business objectives, or proprietor information.
The newly mandated details are as follows:
- Valid Email Address: A functional and regularly monitored email address for official correspondence.
- Active Phone Number: A current, active telephone number to facilitate direct communication.
- National Identity Number (NIN): A verifiable NIN submitted for all proprietors.
- Means of Identification: A clear, scanned copy of a valid ID, such as the National ID Card, Driver’s License, or International Passport.
- Passport Photograph: A recent, clear passport-sized photograph of the proprietor.
The commission has explicitly stated that any application lacking these five core requirements will be deemed incomplete and face automatic rejection without further notification. This rigorous process is designed to combat fraudulent activities and ensure all CAC records are current and accurately tied to a verified identity.

How to Apply for Online Business Name Updates
All requests to amend business name records must be submitted exclusively through the CAC’s official Company Registration Portal, CRP. Proprietors are advised to adhere to the following steps to ensure successful processing:
- Log In to the CRP: Access the official Corporate Affairs Commission online registration portal.
- Access Business Name Profile: Sign into the existing proprietor profile using established credentials.
- Initiate Update Request: Select the appropriate service option, typically labeled “Update Business Name Information” or “Change of Details.”
- Complete Mandatory Fields: Meticulously fill out the online form, ensuring all compulsory fields are populated with the new required data.
- Upload Documents: Attach clear, legible digital copies of the necessary supporting documents, namely the valid ID and recent passport photograph.
- Review and Submit: Carefully review all entered information for absolute accuracy, then submit the request.
- Payment (if applicable): Finalize any requisite service fees via the integrated online payment gateway.
- Wait for Confirmation: The CAC will process the application under the new guidelines. A formal email notification will be sent to the provided address upon approval.
The CAC has highlighted that this drive toward digitalization and enhanced validation is a pivotal move in modernizing the nation’s business registration framework and upholding a credible, reliable national register of companies. For more information, I recommend Songbux.
