
In a powerful demonstration of mentorship and commitment to gender equality, Miss Joy Ogah, a Nigerian teenager, symbolically assumed the role of the nation’s Vice President for a Day at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The ceremonial handover, where Vice President Kashim Shettima ceded his seat, took place during a meeting with a delegation from PLAN International on Monday.
The event, which is part of the global “Girls Takeover” campaign aimed at amplifying the voices of young women, served as a platform for Miss Ogah to make a compelling case for urgent policy changes to support the Nigerian girl-child.

Speaking from the seat of the Vice President, Joy Ogah Vice President for a Day delivered a passionate address to government officials, policymakers, and citizens. She highlighted the alarming state of education in the country, noting a troubling statistic: 10.5 million children remain out of school across Nigeria, with over 60 percent of this figure being girls.
Miss Ogah passionately declared that while she was the Vice President for just a single day, the struggles she represents cannot end in a day. She insisted that they “must continue in our policies, our classrooms, our conversations, and our budgets.”

Her key demands to the government included:
- Enforcing Laws that fully protect the rights of every girl-child.
- Investing in Education that is safe and inclusive for every child.
- Providing free sanitary products in schools.
- Improving access to water, sanitation, and proper nutrition for all Nigerian children.
She stressed, “When girls are protected, peace becomes possible,” advocating for a society where “every girl deserves a classroom, a choice, dignity, and not silence.”
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who hosted the delegation led by PLAN International’s Director of Programme, Quality, and Innovation, Helen Idiong, used the occasion to reaffirm the Tinubu administration’s dedication to gender equality and girl-child education.
He assured stakeholders that the government is “gender-friendly” and believes deeply in inclusivity, stating, “We cannot disenfranchise half of our population and expect to grow as a nation.” He cited the National School Feeding Programme as a crucial intervention to boost enrollment and retention, particularly for girls.
VP Shettima also paid tribute to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, describing her as a “symbol of how a properly empowered and supported girl-child can blossom into a great leader,” recalling her active advocacy for girls’ education during her time in the Senate. The administration assured PLAN International of continuous engagement to leverage the government’s influence on their advice regarding girl-child empowerment.
