A high, level health crisis has reportedly struck the leadership of Nigeria’s legislative arm, with sources confirming that Senate President Godswill Akpabio is currently hospitalized in London following a collapse. This development has ensured that the Senate President, Akpabio Flown to London, for urgent medical care, remains unavailable for critical national assignments.
The crisis reportedly began when the Senate President collapsed on December 10, 2025. Following the health scare, he was swiftly flown out of Nigeria via a private jet allegedly provided by billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote, underscoring the severity of the emergency. Top sources from the National Assembly indicated that Akpabio is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in the United Kingdom.

This emergency trip has directly impacted legislative proceedings, as the Senate President was conspicuously absent from the crucial interactive session on the Medium Term Expenditure Framework, MTEF, and Fiscal Strategy Paper, FSP, held in the National Assembly on Wednesday. Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi was assigned to represent Akpabio at the critical event, signaling the Senate President’s inability to attend in person.

Further concerns have been raised as this is reportedly the second time the Senate President has been rushed to London for treatment. Sources suggest that Akpabio’s condition is serious enough to warrant continued overseas medical management. This ongoing health issue has triggered discussions among his inner circle, with medical professionals reportedly advising him to reduce his substantial workload or even consider stepping down from the Senate leadership to focus entirely on his health. The gravity of the situation is further evidenced by reports that a number of senators have already traveled to London to visit the hospitalized Senate President.
Akpabio’s last known public appearance was on December 9, just a day before his alleged collapse, where he announced the Senate’s approval of President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin for peace and stability efforts, a decision he had stressed was critical to regional security.
