Child protection efforts recorded a major breakthrough this month as the missing children recovery operation known as Hawaii Operation Shine the Light led to the safe rescue of eight minors across Oʻahu. The coordinated mission, carried out between January 16 and 17, 2026, focused on locating high risk runaway and foster youth who were vulnerable to abuse, exploitation, and human trafficking.
Authorities confirmed that the children were found at different locations on the island and immediately received medical attention along with trauma focused support services. Officials described the outcome as a significant step forward in safeguarding endangered youth during National Human Trafficking Prevention Month.
A broad coalition of federal, state, and local agencies powered the operation, including the Hawaii Department of the Attorney General, the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Missing Child Center Hawaii, and partners such as the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Secret Service, and Honolulu Police Department. The rescued children, aged between thirteen and seventeen, included two who had been missing for more than a year, underscoring the long term dangers faced by unhoused and at risk youth.

Investigators relied on extensive intelligence gathering and public tips to locate the children, after which they were placed into structured care programs involving medical professionals, victim advocates, and child welfare services.
