
Former Minister Jibril Aminu Passes Away in Abuja at 85, Professor Jibril Aminu, a distinguished Nigerian statesman and former Minister of Education and Petroleum Resources, has died at the age of 85. He passed away on Thursday in Abuja after a prolonged illness.
Born in August 1939 in Adamawa State, Prof. Aminu’s illustrious career spanned academia, diplomacy, and politics. He earned his medical degree from the University of Ibadan in 1965 and later obtained a PhD in Medicine from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London.
Prof. Aminu served as the pioneer Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) from 1974 to 1979 and was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri. He was appointed Minister of Education and later Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources between 1989 and 1992. He also served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2003 and represented Adamawa Central in the Senate from 2003 to 2011.
His funeral prayers were held at the National Mosque in Abuja on Thursday, with burial scheduled in his hometown of Song, Adamawa State. Tributes have poured in from across the nation, honoring Prof. Aminu’s contributions to Nigeria’s development in education, energy, and public service.
