FG engages Burkina Faso on detention of aircraft and 11 soldiers

detention of aircraft and 11 soldiers

The Federal Government of Nigeria is currently engaged in high-level diplomatic discussions with the military government of Burkina Faso to secure the release of a Nigerian Air Force, NAF, C-130 military transport aircraft and its personnel following the controversial detention of aircraft and 11 soldiers in the West African nation. This tense international incident has dramatically amplified the political fracture between the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, led by Nigeria, and the new Alliance of Sahel States, AES.

The diplomatic crisis was ignited when the Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft, carrying a total of eleven military personnel which included two crew members and nine passengers, made an unscheduled landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. The NAF’s official statement clarified that the plane was on a routine ferry mission to Portugal from Lagos on December 8, 2025, when the crew detected a technical concern shortly after takeoff. In compliance with strict international aviation safety protocols, which mandate prioritizing life and asset preservation, the crew diverted to the nearest available airfield, Bobo-Dioulasso.

However, the military-led government of Burkina Faso and its allies in the Alliance of Sahel States, comprising Mali and Niger, provided a starkly different account. The AES issued a joint statement condemning the flight, asserting that the NAF aircraft entered Burkinabe airspace without prior authorization or clearance. They denounced the action as a “violation of its airspace and the sovereignty of its member states,” and an “unfriendly act” carried out in disregard of international aviation regulations. Following the forced landing, the authorities launched an investigation and detained the aircraft and its personnel. The AES has since placed its air defense and anti-aircraft systems on maximum alert, authorizing the neutralization of any aircraft that violates their confederate airspace.

The detention is viewed by regional analysts as a direct consequence of the escalating political tensions between the West African giants and the military juntas of the Sahel. Nigeria, as a leading voice in ECOWAS, has been a vocal critic of the recent coups and played a key role in coordinating the recent military intervention, including airstrikes and ground troop deployment, in neighboring Benin Republic to thwart a coup attempt there.

Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the Nigerian Embassy in Ouagadougou, has taken over the handling of the issue. Sources indicate that while the NAF crew’s landing aligns with international law, particularly the Chicago Convention (Article 25) which requires signatory states to permit and provide assistance to aircraft in distress, Burkina Faso appears to be using the incident as a political leverage point against Nigeria’s anti-junta stance. The diplomatic engagement seeks to secure the prompt release of the military personnel and the C-130 aircraft, underscoring the necessity of resolving the matter through dialogue and adherence to principles of neighborliness and aviation safety standards.
