The Life and Controversies of Martins Vincent Otse, A.K.A. VeryDarkMan

Biography of VeryDarkMan, Early Life, Secrets and Network. Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (or VDM), is a prominent and highly controversial Nigerian social media activist and influencer. Born on April 8, 1994, in Kaduna, Nigeria, he has become a formidable force in the Nigerian digital space, known for his bold critiques, fearlessness, and unconventional approach to seeking justice. His online presence, which began in 2022, has rapidly grown, making him a figure who is both celebrated as a social crusader and criticized for his methods.

Early Life and Rise to Prominence

Martins Otse is originally from Agenebode in Edo State but spent his formative years in Kaduna. He attended the University of Lagos, where he studied Business Administration. His social media career took off in 2022, initially gaining attention for his direct and often confrontational videos engaging with Nigerian celebrities. This style quickly earned him a massive following, and by early 2023, his content was going viral. His rise was cemented when Nigerian singer Davido publicly endorsed him on Instagram in June 2023, a move that significantly boosted his platform and visibility.

Social Activism and Public Persona

VeryDarkMan’s brand of activism is unorthodox. He often uses his social media platforms to address social injustice, bad governance, and the behavior of public figures. He has been described as a “social crusader” who uses the power of social media to deliver what some see as swift justice. His targets are not limited to government officials; he also scrutinizes celebrities and other influential individuals he believes are trampling on the rights of others. He is known for his physical appearance—tall, with a muscular physique, and very dark complexion—which has become a part of his public identity. Despite his self-proclaimed role as an “online police,” his methods and pronouncements have frequently landed him in legal trouble.

Major Controversies and Legal Troubles

VeryDarkMan’s career is marked by a series of high-profile controversies and arrests. A timeline of some of his most significant legal issues includes:

Cyberbullying Allegations: In March 2024, he was arrested on charges of cyberbullying and cyberstalking after making accusations against popular Nollywood actresses Iyabo Ojo and Tonto Dikeh. He was remanded in police custody for two weeks before being released.

The Mohbad Case: VeryDarkMan has been deeply involved in the public discourse surrounding the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad. He has been a vocal critic of individuals involved in the case, particularly Mohbad’s wife and actress Iyabo Ojo, whom he accused of trying to “frame” Naira Marley. In a recent development, he claimed to have access to a private WhatsApp group where conversations about controlling the narrative of the case were allegedly taking place. This led to further friction with Iyabo Ojo, who accused the police of breaching her privacy during an interrogation where VeryDarkMan was present.

Defamation and Uniform Misuse: In June 2024, he was arrested again on defamation charges related to a social media post. Later in the year, he was detained by the Nigerian Police Force for a video where he jokingly wore a police-like uniform and introduced himself as a “Chief Superintendent of Police of the Online Division.” He later apologized for this action.

EFCC Arrest: In May 2025, VeryDarkMan was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on allegations of cyberstalking, following multiple petitions. He was released after five days in detention on administrative bail.

Public Impact and Perception

VeryDarkMan’s public image is sharply divided. His supporters view him as a fearless advocate for the common person, using his platform to hold the powerful accountable. They see him as a modern-day Fela Kuti or Gani Fawehinmi, using the digital age as his court. Conversely, his critics and legal opponents accuse him of being a provocateur, a cyberbully, and a purveyor of hate speech. They argue that his sensationalist approach often lacks factual basis and incites public anger, leading to real-world consequences for those he targets. Despite the constant legal challenges and public scrutiny, VeryDarkMan continues to be one of Nigeria’s most influential and talked-about social media figures.
