Bauchi Governor Alleges Wike, APC Plot to ‘Ruin’ His Career

The political rift within the Peoples Democratic Party has reached a fever pitch as the Bauchi Governor, Bala Mohammed, openly accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the ruling All Progressives Congress of orchestrating a clandestine plot to dismantle his political career.

The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party has intensified sharply following allegations by Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is collaborating with the ruling All Progressives Congress to undermine his political future. Speaking on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2026, during a meeting with party stakeholders in Bauchi, the Governor accused the FCT Minister of actively working with external political forces to destabilize his administration and weaken his standing within the opposition party.

Governor Mohammed stated that the breakdown in relations follows his role as Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, where he has consistently pushed for internal reforms that he claims run counter to Wike’s political interests. He alleged that the FCT Minister is exploiting his access to federal power to engineer artificial crises in Bauchi State, using the influence of the central government and the APC as leverage. The Governor described the alleged collaboration as a profound betrayal of the party’s core values, expressing disappointment that a senior PDP figure would, in his view, align with political opponents to weaken a sitting party governor.

According to Mohammed, the alleged plot is aimed at discrediting him for refusing to submit to external control, particularly as political alignments begin to shift ahead of the 2027 general elections. He maintained that his position has made him a target for political suppression and insisted that he would continue to speak out against actions he believes threaten the unity and survival of the opposition. The Governor framed his resistance as a principled stand, warning that silencing dissent within the party could have long term consequences for democratic balance in the country.

Nyesom Wike responded swiftly, rejecting the accusations and describing them as baseless and distracting. The FCT Minister advised the Bauchi Governor to focus on governance issues within his state rather than attributing his challenges to political conspiracies. Wike stated that his attention is fully committed to overseeing major infrastructural development in the Federal Capital Territory and dismissed the allegations as attempts to draw him into state level political disputes.

Wike further argued that the claims were an effort by Governor Mohammed to deflect attention from unresolved internal party issues and governance concerns in Bauchi State. He insisted that he has no interest in destabilizing any PDP governor and maintained that the accusations were designed to court public sympathy and elevate internal disagreements into national controversies.

The escalating exchange has unsettled senior figures within the PDP, raising concerns about deepening divisions that could threaten the party’s cohesion. While Governor Mohammed insists his actions are driven by a desire to protect the future of the opposition, Wike maintains that his critics are motivated by political insecurity and resistance to reform. The confrontation underscores the widening rift between the G Five bloc and the party’s mainstream leadership, a divide that appears set to persist into the new year. As tensions continue to rise, political observers are watching closely to see whether the standoff will fracture the opposition further or trigger a broader realignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
