The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has once again pushed Nigeria’s public higher education system to the brink of a total shutdown by issuing an ASUU new salary structure ultimatum 2026. ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, stated that the union has demonstrated unprecedented patience while the government repeatedly shifted the goalposts on the funding of public universities and the payment of earned academic allowances.

The Federal Ministry of Education and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation have reportedly been locked in emergency meetings since the ultimatum was made public. Government sources suggest that while there is an acknowledgement of the validity of some of the union’s claims, the primary hurdle remains the fiscal constraints of the 2026 budget.
However, ASUU has dismissed these “poverty pleas” from the government, pointing to the high cost of governance and the recent purchase of luxury vehicles for political office holders as evidence that funds are available but improperly prioritized.
As the countdown to the Monday deadline begins, students and parents are pleading with both parties to reach a compromise to avoid another prolonged disruption of the school year.
