APC congress violence in Idanre: 2 Killed, Dozens Injured in Violent Clash
The APC congress violence in Idanre has sent shockwaves across Ondo State after armed thugs stormed a party gathering on Wednesday afternoon, leaving at least two people dead and several others seriously injured. What was meant to be a routine internal exercise of the All Progressives Congress quickly spiraled into chaos in Idanre Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses said gunmen and machete-wielding attackers invaded the venue, causing panic among party members who fled for safety. The violence reportedly targeted prominent figures within the party, turning the congress into a scene of confusion and bloodshed.
Among those critically injured is the brother of the APC Local Government Chairman, who was caught in the crossfire. Medical sources confirmed he remains in a coma after sustaining severe head injuries and multiple deep wounds. While authorities have yet to release the identities of the deceased, community sources say both victims were active party supporters attending the exercise.
The unrest spread beyond the venue, with several vehicles vandalized and windscreens smashed. Residents reported hearing sporadic gunfire for hours, forcing business owners to shut down and families to remain indoors.
Although tensions had reportedly been building within the local party structure, many residents described the scale of the attack as shocking. Survivors believe the disruption was premeditated, aimed at preventing the congress from proceeding as scheduled. Security operatives were said to have been overwhelmed before the attackers fled into nearby forest areas.
The Ondo State Police Command has since deployed additional tactical teams to restore calm. Officials confirmed that while the area is now under control, no arrests have been made as investigations continue.
Community leaders are demanding a thorough probe and urging authorities to ensure that those responsible face justice. The violent disruption of the congress has also sparked calls from some stakeholders for a review or cancellation of the exercise’s outcome.
The incident once again highlights concerns over political violence at the grassroots level, raising fresh questions about security arrangements ahead of upcoming electoral activities in the state.
