Angela Okorie’s Lawyers Oppose Prison Remand
Angela Okorie’s lawyers oppose her prison remand as the cyberstalking case sparks debate over celebrity speech, justice, and digital rights. The Angela Okorie court case has entered a new phase after the Nollywood actress’s legal team publicly challenged the decision to remand her at the Suleja Correctional Centre.
Following her arraignment before Justice Emeka Nwite at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the defence described the remand order as excessive and avoidable, insisting that the allegations of cyberstalking and defamation against their client do not justify imprisonment.
According to her lawyers, the charges linked to online disputes involving Mercy Johnson Okojie and Regina Daniels have been overstretched beyond their legal limits.
The defence team maintains that Angela Okorie committed no criminal offence and that her social media statements, though controversial, fall within the bounds of personal opinion and freedom of expression. In their view, the court ought to have granted bail immediately, especially considering her public profile, family responsibilities, and the non violent nature of the allegations. They argue that keeping her in custody before the bail hearing amounts to unnecessary punishment rather than due process.
At the heart of the dispute is the claim that the actress deliberately spread harmful falsehoods online. Her lawyers countered that the prosecution has failed to produce clear evidence showing malicious intent or any direct link between her posts and criminal harm. They stressed that disagreements and grievances within the entertainment industry are better addressed through civil channels, not criminal prosecution under cybercrime laws.
The defence also raised concerns about how the case has been handled so far. They questioned why the bail application was not heard alongside the arraignment, warned against what they described as a coordinated attempt to damage the actress’s reputation, and cautioned that an aggressive interpretation of the Cybercrime Act could undermine constitutional rights to free speech.
Despite remaining in custody, the actress’s legal representatives say she is emotionally stable and fully prepared to defend herself in court. They confirmed that fresh applications are being filed to secure her release while the case continues. Meanwhile, prosecutors have stood by their position, arguing that her online conduct created an intimidating digital atmosphere and that previous warnings were ignored.
