The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced a significant internal policy shift, reinforcing its stance as it prepares for the upcoming electoral cycle. In a decisive move, the party barred Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed from integrating into its structures.
The APC leadership rejected the governor’s overtures, citing the need to maintain party discipline, unity, and loyalty. This development underscores a broader strategic repositioning within the party as it strengthens its internal framework ahead of the elections.
This development emerged following a high level meeting in Abuja where the party clarified its stance on high profile defections, particularly those involving sitting governors from the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Party insiders reveal that the decision to block the Governor’s entry was rooted in a desire to protect the interests of foundation members within the Bauchi State chapter of the APC. Leadership figures argued that allowing a sitting governor to defect and automatically take over the party structure would lead to internal friction and the marginalization of those who have remained loyal to the APC through various political seasons.

The National Publicity Secretary emphasized that while the APC remains an inclusive platform, it will no longer serve as a “refuge” for politicians seeking to escape internal crises within their original parties without a clear ideological alignment.
The situation in Bauchi has become a focal point for national discourse, as Governor Bala Mohammed has recently been involved in various high level consultations that many interpreted as a prelude to a formal defection.
However, the APC National Working Committee noted that the Governor’s previous political track record and his current standing with the PDP leadership made his entry into the ruling party a “high risk” move. By maintaining this firm stance, the APC appears to be prioritizing the stability of its state chapters over the numerical advantage of having another governor in its fold.
This rejection is seen as a significant blow to the Governor’s reported efforts to diversify his political alliances as the 2027 general elections approach. Political analysts suggest that the APC’s refusal to admit him reflects a broader strategy to avoid the “importation of baggage” from opposition parties, which has historically led to protracted legal battles and leadership tussles within the APC.
The party has instead directed its focus toward strengthening its grassroots presence in the North East, encouraging current members to remain steadfast rather than looking toward defecting heavyweights to lead their regional campaigns.
As the political atmosphere continues to heat up, the Bauchi State Governor now faces the challenge of consolidating his influence within the PDP or seeking alternative platforms for his future aspirations. The APC’s decision marks a departure from the “big tent” approach that characterized previous administration cycles, suggesting a new era of selective membership aimed at ideological purity.
