US Denies Direct Role in Khamenei Strike

The US denial of killing Supreme Leader Khamenei has taken center stage following reports of the Iranian leader’s death amid escalating regional tensions. The United States government has formally clarified its position after the confirmed killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on February 28, 2026, during a large scale military operation in Tehran.

Senior officials in Washington stated that while the United States provided intelligence and logistical support under what was described as Operation Epic Fury, the strike that targeted Khamenei’s residence was led and executed by Israel. The White House emphasized that the operation was not a unilateral American assassination but part of a coordinated effort aimed at dismantling Iran’s military command infrastructure.

Iranian state media reported on March 1 that the 86 year old leader, who had ruled since 1989, was killed when more than 30 precision guided munitions struck his compound on Pasteur Avenue. After initial conflicting statements, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed his death and declared a period of national mourning lasting forty days. Several senior officials were also reported killed in the strike, including high ranking military figures and members of Khamenei’s family.

In public remarks delivered from Mar a Lago and through social media posts, President Donald Trump characterized the development as justice for the Iranian people and a positive shift for global stability.

However, administration officials stressed that the US denial of killing Supreme Leader Khamenei as a direct American action is intended to clarify the legal and diplomatic framework surrounding the incident. Analysts suggest Washington’s stance seeks to reduce potential international legal complications associated with targeting a sovereign head of state, instead positioning the strike as an Israeli led military decision supported by allied intelligence.

Meanwhile, the US military has heightened readiness across the region. Officials confirmed that American defense systems intercepted numerous Iranian ballistic missiles allegedly launched in retaliation toward Israel and US military installations in the Gulf. The Pentagon continues to monitor the situation closely amid fears of further escalation.

Inside Iran, the aftermath has triggered significant political maneuvering. Reports indicate that the Assembly of Experts, under pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has begun the process of selecting a successor.

Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader’s son, is widely rumored to be a leading candidate as authorities attempt to preserve continuity within the Islamic Republic. At the same time, videos circulating online show mixed reactions among citizens, with public mourning in some cities and visible celebrations in others.

As the so called Twelve Day War moves into an uncertain next phase, Washington has reaffirmed its objective of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. The White House has also signaled that members of Iran’s armed forces who stand down will be granted immunity, while warning that any further aggression will be met with decisive force.

With Iran entering a new and unpredictable chapter, global leaders remain on alert as a transitional leadership council works to stabilize the country following the loss of its most powerful political figure in nearly four decades.
