Tinubu Sacks Egbetokun, Appoints Tunde Disu as New IGP

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reshuffled the nation’s security leadership with the appointment of Tunde Disu new IGP to head the Nigeria Police Force, replacing Kayode Egbetokun, who has served since June 2023. The announcement, made via a state house press release on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, signals a strategic shift in the federal government’s approach to tackling Nigeria’s escalating internal security challenges and reforming policing nationwide.

Tunde Disu, formerly an Assistant Inspector General of Police, rose to national prominence as the Commander of the Intelligence Response Team, succeeding Abba Kyari. His tenure as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State was notable for reducing violent crime and strengthening community-police relations. Analysts view Disu’s elevation as a move to introduce fresh energy and intelligence-led strategies into Nigeria’s law enforcement efforts.

President Tinubu expressed appreciation to outgoing IGP Kayode Egbetokun for his service but stressed that the current security landscape demands renewed leadership. The President’s office highlighted that Disu’s appointment is part of a broader effort to build a proactive, technology-driven police force. While reactions across the country have been mixed, reports indicate that many officers welcome a leader committed to personnel welfare and merit-based promotions.

As Tunde Disu new IGP assumes office, attention will focus on addressing pressing issues such as kidnapping, banditry, and cybercrime. He is also expected to oversee the final stages of the proposed state police transition, a key component of the Tinubu administration’s decentralization agenda. Formal handover ceremonies are scheduled at the Force Headquarters, Louis Edet House, where Disu is anticipated to unveil his blueprint for a “modernized and citizen-friendly” police force.
