APC: US Military Support Won’t Undermine Nigeria’s Sovereignty
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reassured Nigerians that renewed US Military support in the fight against terrorism will not compromise the country’s sovereignty. According to the ruling party, the Nigeria US military partnership is a cooperative effort aimed solely at strengthening national security and combating insurgency, banditry, and cross-border terrorism.
In a statement released Wednesday, the APC emphasized that the partnership is grounded in mutual respect and international protocols, ensuring that Nigeria remains the primary architect of its internal security strategies while benefiting from advanced intelligence and technical expertise.
Addressing public concerns over foreign military involvement, APC leaders highlighted the evolving nature of modern terrorism, which requires a multi-lateral response. They clarified that US assistance focuses on capacity building, surveillance, and equipment support not a direct takeover of Nigeria’s military operations.
The party outlined the key pillars of the cooperation:
- Intelligence Sharing: Utilizing satellite imagery and signals intelligence to track terrorist movements in the North-West and North-East.
- Technical Training: Equipping Nigerian special forces with advanced skills for urban warfare and counter-insurgency.
- Equipment Acquisition: Streamlining delivery of critical defense assets to counter asymmetrical threats effectively.
Responding to critics who fear foreign influence, the APC reaffirmed that Nigeria maintains full operational control over all security maneuvers. The party argued that national sovereignty is strengthened when the country can defend its borders and citizens effectively, even when leveraging international partnerships.
The APC also pointed to recent escalations by terrorist groups such as Lakurawa and other splinter cells, noting that US collaboration enhances Nigeria’s ability to disrupt their financing and logistics across the Sahel region.
“Sovereignty is not synonymous with isolation,” the statement read. Nigerians were urged to view the partnership as a strategic tool for progress, not a sign of weakness. Every agreement with foreign partners, the APC noted, undergoes rigorous legal and constitutional vetting to safeguard the nation’s constitutional mandates.
