Court Orders Angela Okorie Remanded Over Cybercrime Charges. The Nigerian entertainment scene was jolted on Thursday after the Angela Okorie cybercrime case took a dramatic turn, with a Federal High Court in Abuja ordering the popular Nollywood actress to be remanded in custody. Angela Okorie was arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite on multiple counts bordering on cybercrime and alleged cyberstalking, stemming from accusations that she used her social media platforms to harass and defame fellow actors.
Although she pleaded not guilty to all charges, the court ruled that she should remain in custody while her bail application is being considered.
The case followed several petitions submitted to law enforcement agencies, accusing the actress of sustained online intimidation and defamatory publications. Prosecutors alleged that Okorie shared false and damaging claims through her Instagram account with the intention of insulting, harassing, and harming the reputations of individuals within the film industry. The charges were filed under the Cybercrime Act, placing the matter among the most prominent celebrity related cybercrime prosecutions in recent years.
Inside the courtroom, tension was high as the charges were read aloud. The prosecution accused the actress of making defamatory statements against colleagues including Mercy Johnson Okojie and Regina Daniels, claims it described as baseless and injurious.
The allegations include cyberstalking through repeated online conduct, intentional insults transmitted via digital platforms, and defamatory publications capable of damaging professional standing. Angela Okorie maintained her innocence throughout the proceedings, but her lawyers were unable to secure her immediate release after the prosecution requested time to respond to the bail application.
Justice Nwite subsequently ordered that the actress be remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State pending the hearing of her bail request. Her legal team expressed confidence that bail would be granted, arguing that the charges are bailable and that their client poses no flight risk. Meanwhile, news of her remand has sparked intense debate across social media, with many discussing the limits of online expression and the responsibilities that come with celebrity influence.

Beyond the personal legal battle, the case has broader implications for public figures and influencers in Nigeria. Authorities have repeatedly warned that digital platforms are not beyond the reach of the law, and this prosecution reinforces the government’s resolve to clamp down on online harassment and defamation. As the court prepares to hear the bail application, the Nollywood industry and the public will be watching closely, aware that the outcome could set a lasting precedent for social media conduct among celebrities.
