A Season of Kindness: Elumelu Family Reaches Orphaned Children in Three States
The festive period in Nigeria has been defined by a profound display of communal support as the Elumelu family charity expanded its reach to support hundreds of vulnerable children across Lagos, Delta, and Edo states. This late-December 2025 humanitarian mission, led by Dr. Awele Elumelu, Chairperson of Avon Healthcare Limited, focused on alleviating the immediate nutritional and operational burdens faced by orphanage homes and specialized care centers.
By delivering a massive consignment of essential food staples, the initiative aimed to ensure that even the most marginalized members of society could transition into the new year with dignity and food security.
The outreach was officially flagged off at the Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice in Surulere, Lagos, a facility uniquely dedicated to children with complex medical conditions and congenital abnormalities. During her visit, Dr. Elumelu toured the hospice, engaging directly with the children and offering heartfelt encouragement to the caregivers who manage the daily medical and emotional needs of those with special requirements.
This year’s donation was particularly substantial, featuring a total of 1,730 bags of rice and 290 bags of beans distributed across twelve key locations. In Lagos, the beneficiaries included well-known institutions such as Little Saints Orphanage, SOS Children’s Village, Living Fountain Orphanage, Adiel Children’s Home, and Compassionate Orphanage.
Beyond the commercial capital, the Elumelu family charity significantly impacted communities in Delta and Edo states. In Delta, the family’s ancestral home, the distribution reached the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) School of Nursing and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Issele-Ukwu, alongside several local communities in Onicha-Uku.
Dr. Elumelu noted that the decision to include multiple states stems from a recognition that the economic challenges of 2025 have affected caregivers nationwide. “We can never do too much,” she remarked, “but we must do what we can to ease the burden on those who dedicate their lives to these human beings.”
The impact of this gesture was echoed by Mrs. Laja Adedoyin, the founder of Hearts of Gold Children’s Hospice, who highlighted the critical nature of such support. She explained that for a specialized hospice, “food is life,” and the consistent support from the Elumelu family has been instrumental in keeping the facility operational amidst rising medical and maintenance costs.
