Council of State Confirms Amupitan The New INEC Chairman. The National Council of State has given its definitive approval to the nomination of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The unanimous endorsement took place during the Council’s meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, October 9, 2025.

The new electoral commission head is a 58-year-old Professor of Law who hails from Kogi State. In presenting the nominee to the Council, President Tinubu highlighted the significance of the choice, noting that Professor Amupitan is the first individual from the North-Central state of Kogi to be put forward for the esteemed position of INEC Chairman. This detail underscored a commitment to broadening representation in key national offices.

The critical decision by the Council of State, which comprises the President, Vice-President, all former Presidents and Heads of the Government of the Federation, all former Chief Justices of Nigeria, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, all State Governors, and the Attorney-General of the Federation, officially paves the way for Professor Amupitan to assume leadership of the nation’s electoral body. The development was officially confirmed to the public by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Assistant to the President on Information and Strategy, via a statement released shortly after the Council’s proceedings.
