Travelers and applicants in Nigeria can breathe a sigh of relief as the United States diplomatic mission has confirmed that essential visa and passport services will proceed uninterrupted, even as a partial shutdown of the U.S. federal government takes hold.
The assurance comes amid widespread concern among citizens that the political deadlock in Washington, D.C., could lead to the cancellation of scheduled appointments for non-immigrant visas, student interviews, and passport renewals. However, U.S. consular operations overseas are, for now, insulated from the immediate financial fallout of the funding lapse.
According to statements released by the embassy, scheduled passport and visa processing at U.S. Embassies and Consulates abroad will continue “as the situation permits” during the budgetary impasse. The embassy did, however, note an unavoidable consequence of the shutdown: a significant reduction in public communication.
